Hövels Bitterbier

Never having heard of – let alone tried - a “bitterbier” before, the Hövel’s Bitterbier on the menu at the Kruse Baimken biergarten in Munster on the fine sunny evening that I was enjoying in Germany looked intriguing enough for me to give it a try.
Fine choice – the frothing glass of deep-brown beer that arrived at the table brough with it a deep, malty aroma and a mouthful of bread. Though, that could have been the pretzel that came with it, I guess. Not as sweet as the Diebel’s I’d enjoyed the night before, this nevertheless reminded me of the altbier style, and I’m wondering if there’s some relationship in recipe there. Not overly carbonated, but with a head that remained fine and high throughout the glass, I really enjoyed this one too. One can’t help but agree with the web site; “Eine Komposition von einzigartigem Charakter”. Of course!
Apologies for the blurry picture below… at the time, I was far more interested in the contents of the glass than in photographing it. It does get a bit of the pretzel in the foreground though, and they were pretty darn good too
