Getting back to some old standbyes… Alaskan IPA comes to us from what I would regard as a solid brewery… these guys up on the high country know how to make their beer… guessing there isn’t much else to do, though, so they have that advantage.
Overall this isn’t a bad offering from the brewery. Not one of their standouts, but not bad. For the genre, it is a bit flat… low carbonation and very mellow. Hops are in there for sure, but again on the mellow side… their site says it is dry hopped, but I can’t notice it really. The finish is short and dry. As the tasting continues, it does tend to grow on you.
This may actually be a pretty decent session IPA because of how mellow it is. Overall, not bad but not one that will be on my IPA list in the future given choice.

A relatively new offering, Alaskan White comes to us this year from the great Alaskan Brewing Company. I am generally impressed with Alaskan and think they do a solid job of both beer brewing and marketing, keeping it real from our northernmost state. This brew comes as us a light yellow with a small head. The nose is slightly fruity and definitely reminiscent of witbier. The body is clean and tight with a similar finish, keeping this brew a tight little package all around.

This happened to be the last beer of the night and on a night where we were drinking some big beers, so I will definitely say my judgement could have been off… but then again, I was in the mode and feeling good about things, so I am solid enough to blog about it and feel respectable…
From our friends at Alaskan Brewing Company comes the Alaskan Stout. They have had some really solid dark beers in the past, especially the Alaskan Smoked Porter, so I had high hopes for this one… I have to say, though, that I was a bit dissapointed and may not go back again… it is a dark beer but you can still see through it with the amber color tones that many dark beers share. There was narry a nose on the thing and that led right into a lack-luster body and finish. There just wasn’t anything notable or special about this stout and I have to say they didn’t deliver on what I was expecting for a solid stout…

A potential future contributor to the blog stopped by the office the other day and noted he had an oustanding beer… That beer just so happens to be one that I have been waiting to get on the blog and so here you are… Alaskan Smoked Porter.
We talked about how truly good this brew is and it comes down to a few things for me… it is smokey, as advertised, but not like quite as strong as Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier - Märzen and not quite as light as Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier. Alaskan has it it right in the middle with a beer that offers silky smooth smokiness throughout the tasting session without ever being overpowering or controlling. From nose to body to finish, this beer’s bitter-smooth smoke character pleases to the last drop… god that sounds like a marketing line, doesn’t it.

The first of the 2008/2009 winter beers to go on the blog, Alaskan Winter Ale comes to us from our friends over at Alaskan Brewing Company. I have been a big fan of these folks for some time and they didn’t let me down with this seasonal offer. The beer pours a dark amber color, has a clean and refreshing nose, and gives you a little bit of the spruce right at the beginning. This subsides as the beer sits for a bit, but I swear it was there. A standard body and easy, smooth, and mildly complex finish make this a very drinkable beer.

Alaskan Brewing Company has done very well on the blog and I think Alaskan Amber is probably one of the classics, so I am inclined to have high hopes heading into just about any Alaskan beer we might run into. Alaskan Pale didn’t make it into the exclusive club, but it did taste mighty fine and make me want to drink more.
A staw colored brew with a smallish head, this sweet smelling beer has a mild hop taste that goes down easy and finishes clean and smooth. Alaskan dry hops this beer according to their website and I don’t know a lot about dry hopping but I can make a guess at what it does to this beer and I like it! Went really good with the hot night and good times in th cul-de-sac tonight. Cheers!

All the way from the Alaskan Brewing Company comes this little bottle of summer ale, a Kölsch-style limited edition that I’ve been looking forward to for a while, because I really like German beer, and it’s been a while since I’ve been to Cologne, the traditional home of Kölsch.
This one’s actually been sitting in the fridge for a couple weeks now, waiting for just the right hot & sticky moment to work it’s way out of the bottle and across my tongue. First impression is of a glowing, golden liquid backlit by today’s unseasonably sunny Seattle weather. Doesn’t look too carbonated in the glass, but it’s got a really decent bubbly feel to it as you sip. Not a lot of head, but very refreshing, good strong flavour and a nice balance between the hops and malt mean this is something I’ll be keeping a supply of around for the next couple months.

So, we have a bunch of folks in from around the world visiting our fine corner of the US this week. Good to see everyone and made me wonder if I would get a chance to keep up with the blog… no worries, though… always time to enjoy another cold one. They brought in a shipment of the big bottles of Alaskan Amber a last week to Fred Meyer, so I had to grab one. I have always been a fan and I knew I would like this one, so it was a no brainer to spend the $2.69.
Alaskan Amber has to be one of the staple amber beers out there… at least for this neck of the woods. Good price, good beer. It isn’t the smoothest amber you will ever taste, but it is mild enough to make it very, very easy to drink. Not much of a head, a good amber color, and a solid mix of malt and hops and this one easily makes it into the fridge time and time again. Highly recommended.
