Redhook Treblehook Barley Wine

Posted by dugpark on October 9, 2009

Redhook Treblehook Barley Wine – Coming off a fine unboxing and not being able to hold off for the 1 to 3 years recommended, I cracked this bad boy open with The Belly looking on.

Tasting: dark brown copper pour with very slight head.  Aroma is sweet and malty with background smells of hops.  The body leads with a hit of the ABV and malt and with nice hop influences presenting itself more on the front stage.  It leads through to a short, compact and dry finish.  Overall The Belly and I agree… this is a solid Barley Win with some really nice work in the throughout.  I will be picking up a bottle to cellar as soon as I see it… :)

Hale’s Ales Rudyard’s Rare Barleywine Style Ale

Posted by dugpark on June 17, 2009

Another brew from a PNW long timer, Hale’s Ales out of Seattle.  We were on a bit of a barleywine kick, so this Rudyard’s Rare fit right in.

As far as the tasting goes… this wasn’t a spectacular brew… from start to finish it was kind of just off… just a little.  The head was probably the best part… nice, cream colored and foamy.  The aroma was barely there, though… two votes of the tasters for fruity but I couldn’t hit it.  The taste was off just a little bit with some slight astringency in the finish.  The ABV is there for you, but maybe a little to strong.  Overall not super impressive… one I really won’t be looking for again.

Left Hand Brewing Widdershins Barleywine Style Ale

Posted by dugpark on June 15, 2009

Other than being a lot of fun to say, Left Hand Brewing Widdershins is a really, really solid barleywine style ale.  I mean really solid.  The bottle notes 2007 for bottle conditioning (and you can see it), so this has been sitting at least a year and a half.  The entire crew thought highly of it, as well.   The nose was nice and hoppy with slight sweetness that lent itself to the oak aging.  The body came through, then, smooth and mild but with plenty of flavor and character.  The end has a nice little bitterness to it, bringing the style to a full close.  Overall this is a great brew that deserves your attention!

Check out their site for some good info on this brew… seasonal, part of the Big Mo seris, 9.1% ABV, 70 IBUs, etc.

For a definition os widdershins, though, you need to go to Wikipedia… :)

Full Sail Barley Wine

Posted by dugpark on April 17, 2009

Full Sail Old Boardhead Barlywine Ale pours a dark amber color with a small head…. slight nose, mild for a barley wine, tart… good on the hops… that is about it.  Prett average for a barley wine.

Uinta Brewing XVI Sixteenth Anniversary Barley Wine Ale

Posted by dugpark on April 12, 2009

Coming up on the final beer tasted while in Utah/Idaho and finally getting to the best beer we had on the trip, Uinta Anniversary Barley Wine Ale comes to us with a whopping 10.4% ABV (the highest I have tasted from that sad state).  Picked this one up at the Liquor Store, as well… this was fine, fine brewing.  Thanks Uinta!

The pour is dark amber with a high and tight head, long lasting and meaning business.  The nose is sweet and malty with a definte hop offset… good balance.  The body, also balanced, comes smooth with the hops hitting first at the front of the mouth and the sweet malt finish coming through at the back.  The finish is slightly bitter with the hops but doesn’t keep long enough to be offputting.  All in all, this was a great little barley wine and one that I will look for when I am there again next year! :)

Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine Style Ale

Posted by dugpark on March 10, 2009

Last beer of the night at the now famous O’banion tasting… Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine Style Ale went over better for some than others.  The strongest beer of the night by a long shot, this was a true to style barley wine ale that didn’t dissapoint.  It came hot off the press from Malt & Vine and we were lucky enough to enjoy it the day after purchase.  A beautiful copper pour, a healthy head, a hoppy/bitter finish, and an overall very strong presentation from all accounts.  Those that liked hoppy beers loved this one and those that didn’t put it last… fairly polarizing.  I was on the + side of this one, though, so it gets a Will Buy Again for the blog… :)
