Shiner 100 Commemorator

From the web site, this brew was created in honor of Shiner’s centenial year.  Shiner 100 Commemorator takes the doppelbock style and sends it on an interesting spin.  At 6.7%, it isn’t super powerful but it comes to you pretty solid anyhow.  The nose is light and malty with a taste that is similar but definitely portrays a sweetness to it.  It is dark and reminds me of some of the dark lagers that I have had.  All agreed that it isn’t a bad brew but maybe not 100 years worthy… but hey, we all were able to drink easy and figure this is just a good non-commital brew.

Shiner Bohemian Black Lager

I think I have finally recovered.  I was able to enjoy a brewski tonight and I didn’t feel any pains or gag reflexes, so we are good to go with the new stuff again.  Sweet.

I did still want to take it easy, so I went with what I thought would be a relatively safe beer, Shiner Bohemian Black Lager.  I was right.  This mild dark lager was smooth, light of body, and simple on the finish, which was just fine by me.  An interesting beer that grew on me as I continued to drink.  First impression wasn’t great, but I stuck in there and ended up liking it.  No head to be found, kind of a dark transparent color which is the trademark of the schwarzbier variety.

Overall, a good beer to get back in the swing of things but I probably wouldn’t buy it if I saw it again on the shelves at the local beer store.

Shiner Bock

Ahhhh Shiner Bock.  A glorious bock beer.  Shiner is brought to us from a town of just over 2000 people by the same name.  A fine beer that has many pros and few cons. 

Pros: Not too dark, not too light.  Not too bitter, not too smooth.  Full flavor but not overwhelming.

Cons: Must be cold… for my liking, at least.  Reminds me too much of Amber Bock… a beer that I had at my bachelor party nearly 10 years ago and still have nightmares about…

Overall, Shiner Bock is a fine beer.  One that is just as good on draught as it is in the bottle or in a mug.  My buddy MFPC also tells us that it is a fine beer to boil bratwurst in, but I haven’t tried it yet… maybe this summer.
