Dick’s IPA

Posted by dugpark on December 23, 2008

I chased the Avery India Pale Ale with the Dick’s IPA and I have to tell you they are a good little match up. Very similar in color, the Dick’s has a much bigger head on it… no pun intended… you take that where you want to. The nose on the Dick’s is a bit more hoppy vs. fruity… no pun intended, you take that where you want to. The taste of the Dick’s on the tip of the tongue is much more pronounced than the Avery where that one had much more on the roof of the mouth than the Dick’s. The Dick’s does have a more pronounced bitterness at the back of the throut, though… no pun… ah crap… you get the point. :)

Overall, Dick’s IPA satisfies and has to be on par with with Avery’s overall performance although in different ways…

Dick’s Irish Style Ale

Posted by dugpark on December 12, 2008

Another little ditty from Dick’s Brewing company, Dick’s Irish Style Ale.  As you can probably tell, I am making my way through a backlog of beer in the fridge and I had a bunch of Dick’s lined up that have been just sitting there after I bought a variety pack from Top Foods many months ago.  So here is the latest!

Overall just kind of a myeh beer… as you 0pen it up, you get hops and malts in the nose and body… nothing to write home about… you get a sweet finish, and then this beer is done… this Dick’s definitely leaves you unsatisfied.

Dick’s Dick Danger Ale

Posted by dugpark on December 10, 2008

Been on a tasting kick lately!  Dick’s Dick Danger Ale happens to be next on the list!

This is an interesting offer from Dick’s… as it pours, it looks like root beer, its nose is half malt half hop, it has a nice frothy head and a malty body… the finish is short and crisp.  As I read up about it on their website, even their explanation is interesting:

“The result is a highly drinkable dark ale which bridges the gap between pale and porter.”

Even with it being in an interesting position on the beer chart, that can’t overcome the fact that I wanted it to live somewhere… I wanted it to make up its mind and pick something… as it is, it kind of lives in limbo and its claim to fame for me is simply that it is interesting.

Dick’s Double Diamond Winter Ale

Posted by dugpark on December 1, 2008

Dick’s Brewing Company has had a pretty good run on the blog with 4 out of 5 beers hitting Will Buy Again.  Dick’s Double Diamond Winter Ale is in good company, then, as it enters the blog and hits a sweet spot on the winter beer list.

The beer pours a solid amber color, the head froths up accordingly and the nose spells of hard hitting hops.  Drinking this baby cold gives a super clean feel and finish and is refreshing all in one drink.  I actually wish I had one right now it left such a solid impression… at 7.5% alcohol, it keeps you warm on the inside as well… :)

Dick’s Lava Rock Porter

Posted by dugpark on September 27, 2008

I realized tonight that I have too many Dick’s in my fridge.  I bought their variety pack a while ago and just haven’t been able to make it through them all.  These guys really do have a huge selection!

Tonight, then, was my first Dick’s for some time…  Dick’s Lava Rock Porter.  I have to admit that their labels lack something… maybe a little pizzaz or retro-cool look would help… right now it keeps that old school inkjet printer look that I admit turns me off a little… ah well… at least it has no impact on their beer flavor that I know of.

So, the Lava Rock Porter was a pretty good choice.  I actually think this one had one of the best all around noses I have had in a while… it was very telling of the actual taste of the beer, which I enjoy.  Dark and rich, but not so much as to be too malty, this one smelled really good.  Taste was right in line.  Again with the dark roasted malt but balanced by some pretty decent hops.  I would put this one up there… definitely if you like a hoppier porter.

Dick’s Best Bitter

Posted by dugpark on August 4, 2008

My second Dick’s Brewery beer in a row… Dick’s Best Bitter comes to us from the top shelf where other Dick’s beers are pushing to the back, trying to hide from the inevitable.  This brew couldn’t escape and I am kind of glad to have it out of the fridge, to be honest…

While Dick’s has done pretty good on the blog so far, this one took them a step back.  I really wasn’t impressed with it and had a hard time finishing the bottle.  I was in the mood… I had just enjoyed the Dick’s Pale Ale and was ready for another of their fine offerings when this one came along.  What I don’t read on their website is how sweet this is.  It is uncannily sweet, which throws me off.  I want it hoppy and bitter, damn it, like a good ESB should be.  I don’t want it offset.  Keep it blunt, please…

Good amber color, medium head, hoppy nose, light body, and super-sweet finish.  The last of which keeps this from making it to my fridge again.

Sometimes you have to take one step back to move two steps forward the saying says… lets see if that is the case for Dick’s. :)

Dick’s Pale Ale

Posted by dugpark on August 3, 2008

I still have *a bunch* of Dick’s Brewing Company beer in my fridge from when I bought a random 12 pack at Top Food and Drug in Snohomish at least a month ago.  So I figure it is time to start getting through it.

Tonight, Dick’s Pale Ale was the first to be opened.  I wanted something a bit light to go with tacos and this one served up very well.  It had a very good mix of hops in it but the sweetness they mentioned actually balanced it out nicely.  A fairly strong pale ale, this one had a good crisp finish and an overall high drinkability.

This makes the thrid Will Buy Again from Dick’s Brewing Company… we are on a roll!

Dick’s Cream Stout

Posted by dugpark on May 25, 2008

First beer of the tasting at Malt & Vine yesterday was Dick’s Cream Stout.  Let me tell you, this is one fine specimen of the stout species.  It is on nitros, so that may be playing with it a bit, but I think this ranks right up there with the Ten Fidy from Oscar Blues

A good nitros head and a smell of toastedness and smooth, smooth chocolate assaulted both taste buds and nostrils as this one quickly got drained.  This is a dark beer that doesn’t pack a huge ABV punch, but it is super-tasty.  It lives up to the “smooth” in its name unlike many others we have had the chance to review.

I wanted to buy some but they were out… next time, this will make my list.
