Stone Thirteenth Anniversary Ale

Posted by dugpark on August 19, 2009

At 9.5% and having more hops than any other beer Stone has ever brewed, Stone’s Thirteenth Anniversary Ale is, in one word, awesome.  I had this at Malt & Vine several weeks ago, right off the tap and it hadn’t impressed me that much.  Could have been my mood or could have been that this brew is just simply awesome in the bottle.

The mix of Chinook, Simcoe, and Centennial hops for bittering, flavor, and aroma is perfect.  I am really starting to like the Simcoe’s and appreciate that Stone through it in.  It all starts with the nose… floral and hoppy… nearly perfect for a big hoppy ale.  The aroma isn’t just strong when you first open and poor, either… this nose sticks around and doesn’t let you forget.  The pour is nice, in and of itself.  A dark amber color with a mammoth head just gets you ready for an adventure.  The flavor is super hoppy, dark and malty, and all comes together to present an amazing ale.

Check out the blurb on the bottle for a good read and enjoy this one… it is awesome.

Terminal Gravity ESG (Extra Special Golden)

Posted by dugpark on July 16, 2009

I just so happened to pick Terminal Gravity ESG up from Malt & Vine the other day and then cosequently received a recommendation for it from my good friend Duncan… very much a coincidence I have to take advantage of, so here you go old chap… lets see if our tastes are aligned at all… :) Actually… I think Duncan recommended the IPA… this one is a Rye ale, so won’t compare beer to beer but lets see what this brewery can do.

Pours a clean, clear golden yellow with moderate head. Nose is light an sunny… hard to put a finger on it, but I note slight citrus. Taste is light… but thick… overall the taste is very mild from front to back, start to finish… they compare it to having more flavor than a traditiona American lager on their website but I would even draw that comparison… I can actually *drink* this beer… :)

Overall a very easy drinking brew that would be welcome in my fridge on any warm summer’s day.

Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA

Posted by dugpark on July 7, 2009

Supposedly “the newest member of the Firestone family”, Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA was the second Firestone Walker brew Mr. Dave, Mrs. Heather, and I decided to try from good ol’ Malt & Vine (not sure who bought this one, tbh).  This little brew comes at you with a 7.5% ABV… not for the faint of heart.  The nose is nice… hoppy and fruity just like it should be.  The body is sharp and bitter with hints of peaches coming through in the aftertaste… the overall finish is clean and crisp, leaving you with a pleasant sensation… like you just walked in from a brisk fall walk to the mailbox… kind of… sort of… anyhow, overall solid for the style and good from start to finish.

Broughton Ales Black Douglas

Posted by dugpark on June 30, 2009

On my last trip to Malt & Vine, I actually had the chance to share a bit of my passion/hobby with my wife and she happened to spot this little beauty.  “Have you tried Black Douglas,” she asked as she noted my similarity to the handsome man on the picture…  “Why no, hon… I have not… but I shall try it now on this wonderful summer day,” and so it appeared on the counter and then in my fridge later that afternoon.  Broughton Ales has had one other appearance on the blog with their Broughton Ales Merlin’s Ale and it didn’t do too shabby, so pretty decent hopes that this one would turn out well.

Black Douglas pours a dark ruby color with big head… a resemblence I am used to, actually… the nose is light and malty with hints of hops and the body is malty and spicy with a bitter finish.   It is a Scottish Ale for sure, but dark malt character and the spice puts a slightly different spin on the traditional Scottish Ale, leaving you with a n overall solid impression.  Nice and easy to drink, even…

You should check out their site for some of the history of Black Douglas… he was known to be a powerful knight that put his soul into battle but was finally thwarted in the end.  Good context as you drink this brew peacefully and somewhat in honor of this brave man.

Midnight Sun Monk’s Mistress

Posted by dugpark on June 14, 2009

A new brewery… or at least one that has now gone mainstream, welcomes itself to the blog… Midnight Sun Brewing Company brings a couple of treats to us, compliments of Malt & Vine.  This particular brew, Monk’s Mistress or La Maitresse du Moine, just happens to be a big 11.5% ABV dark belgian… hmmm tasty.

As far as the tasting goes, they hit the style pretty square, and definitely on the dark side.  A great big head leads to a nose that brings forth spices… ginger and clove, allspice as well.  the 11.5% ABV is there, in the body, but you really can’t taste it at all.  The  dark body lends itself to a clean dark finish, leaving you fully satisfied with this take on the style.  Overall a pretty tasty brew from the new guys.

De Proef Brewmaster’s Collaboration with Tomme Arthur

Posted by dugpark on June 2, 2009

De Proef Brewmaster’s Collaboration with Tomme Arthur – Wasn’t sure on this one the other day, but decided to bit the bullet and make the purchase at Malt & Vine… so very happy I did.  As the bottle notes, there is definitely a mix of Belgian and American brewing styles… can tell right off the bat.  The mix of the dry hopping and belgian yeast = great results.  Nose is slight… not much of an aroma at all, but the body makes up for the lack of aroma.  It is a light belgian with a nice balance of the hops and malt.  “The Belly” noted citrus in there, as well.  Finish is a tad too short but I won’t hold it against them… :)

Overall a really interesting collaboration project that was pulled off quite nicely.  I recommend checking out some of the links below to get a feel for the two breweries that came together here.

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout

Posted by dugpark on April 28, 2009

Holy crap this is a good beer… Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout came into my fridge from Malt & Vine one fine day and at the same time, two 4 packs made it into Mr. Dave’s fridge from Top Food and Drug.  My tasting just happened to be in a bit of a tasting binge with “The Belly”… we saved it for last since it was the darkest and my oh my were we surprised.  I hadn’t thought much of it other than it sounded strong at 13% ABV with bourbon barrel aging to boot.  What we experienced, though, was something truly amazing…

A dark, dark pour with an average ruddy brown head, the nose may be the strongest I have ever tasted.  Definite bourbon, in fact “The Belly” brought out a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and the similarities are obvious and numerous.  The body is sweet and smooth on the tip of the tongue with a rolling taste frenzy from tip to toe consisting of bourbon, roasted malts and smoke… chocolate hits hard in the end… the 13% is obvious and present throughout the experience.  This beer was tasted at ~60 degrees and was perfect.

Highly, highly recommended and worth buying some to age… it can only get better.  I am bucking the trend, Po… I am going straight to Hall of Fame on this one and you are just going to have to trust me. :)

Beer Wars

Posted by dugpark on April 16, 2009

Beer Wars the movie launched tonight in select cities/theatres across the country.  I was lucky enough to get a ticket from Chandra representing New Century Brewing Company, so I decided to go.  Chandra, please note that I wouldn’t have gone and blogged this if it weren’t for you, so thanks!  Anyhow, I have been following the coming of this film since I found out we are on the blog list… Thanks Beer Wars. :)   I was happy to go and even happier that I went after I had a couple of pints over at Black Raven…  Saw Doug from Malt & Vine there, met a few other beer lovers in line for some popcorn and soda… it was a very happy crew, you could tell.

About the flick… I think I was the only dork with a notebook in the theatre (there were probably 50 folks there), but I wanted to capture a few things… so bear with me.

Overall, the “live” intro and ending were cool and they made enough mistakes to let us know it wasn’t recorded… :)   Most memorable point in the intro was when Anat Baron noted that she “hope it makes you fell something” and someone in the audience yelled out “i like it when you talk dirty.”  Everyone laughed and I knew what kind of night it would be.

This led into some additional insights… i.e. “American beer is like making love in a canoe… it is f’ing close to water.”  An instant classic.  That and the fact that in the early 1900′s there were 1800 breweries in America… by 1978 there were 45… and now there are somewhere north of 1400 and growing quickly.  Can you guess the makeup of that?  ~50% = Anheuser-Busch, ~18% = Miller, and ~11% = Coors.  Pretty sad, folks.

They mentioned a bunch of the “craft” breweries in the film:

But the spent the most time with:

Overall, they painted a pretty bleak picture… both Sam and Rhonda of Dogfish Head and New Century, respectively, have it hard, according to the film… Sam is growing fast and taking risk and going into debt while Rhonda is just trying to make it all work.  This pitted against the big beer companies that are trying to maintain their mainstream positions while meeting the craft brew movement in their own macro sort of way.

As the story progressed, it ventured into the political side of the industry… I decided that beer + politics = suck… pretty decent equation.  Not going to say much else there.

Then it pretty much ended.  It left me feeling a bit sorry for Rhonda… wondering how I can help.  What I like about that, though, is if I step back and extrapolate, I can think that there are a ton of Rhonda’s in the beer industry… the small brewers/companies that are just trying to make it.  So, while I can’t help Rhonda directly (although Chandra is going to help me try), I can help the craft beer movement in general… and I like to think I am doing that with this blog… and my $$$ of course (yes, I am the perfect demographic).

Overall, I had a few thoughts about what they might have missed… they did an ok live Q&A at the end, but what they were missing and what they may have missed overall was the consumer aspect of it.  I would have liked to see a bit more about how consumers feel about the whole thing… i.e. Why do consumers like beer?  What draws them to beer?  What draws a craft brew drinker to craft brews and what draws the macro beer drinker to the macros?  I think they should have had a more average consumer on the panel, for instance… round it out a bit.

I liked the flick.  It held my attention for the 2 hours and I learned a few things.  It validated the fact that craft brew is the the way forward… for many reasons, and I hope to continue to help the movement in any way I can.

Fish Brewing Old Woody

Posted by dugpark on March 15, 2009

Man o’ man am I glad I took the trip to Malt & Vine the other day to get this sweet new release.  Every once in a while a beer just takes you by surprise and this is the one.  It has probably been a month or two since I have had one hit me like this… so thanks Fish Brewing for your wonderful Old Woody!

This beer kicked off a heck of a night of tasting with the glasses all lined up and ready to try some brews.  For the most part it was a great night with all Will Buy Again ratings or better.  Of course I should have figured starting off so well. :)

So… how was the tasting on this one?  The pour was a ruddy red in color, leading to small white and bubbly heads in the four tasting mugs.  The nose smelled of sweet malt and caramel, giving me a dilemma on whether I should just keep smelling it or should actually take a drink.  My tastes buds finally took over and I had my first swallow of this wonderful malt juice and oh was I rewarded!  The nose was right on as the body held sweetness, malts, and a wonderful caramel flavor that made several folks ponder on whether this would be good in a milkshake or over icecream… if I were a betting man, I would bet on it.  The oak aging was there but definitely mild, which I think fit this one well as it gave it more of the background character than front end flavor.  The cloudy body led to sweetness again in the finish with mild complexity but nice succinctness.  Not too much, not too little, especially for 10% ABV.

The Lost Abbey Serpent’s Stout

Posted by dugpark on March 11, 2009

For the most part, The Lost Abbey just kicks ass.  We had a bit of a run in with the 10 commandments, but who really hasn’t… seriously.  Anyhow, I was super excited to see  The Lost Abbey Serpent’s Stout come in at Malt & Vine the other day, so absolutely had to pick it up.

I decided to enjoy it tonight along with catching up on my spring TV… The Big Bang Theory, How I met your mother, Rules of Engagement, American Idol, and America’s Next Top Model… sad, i know, but gotta love DVR.  Anyhow… this one was primed and ready to go so I jumped in.

It definitely pours a dark, dark elixir with a muddy brown head… looks really good in the glass, you can tell it is going to sit dark and thick.  The nose comes through with roasted malt and is a bit sweet in a good way… The high ABV (10.5%) is definitely there but not obnoxious.   The taste is dark and malty with chocolate undertones… no coffee for me, but definite roasted chocolate.  Silky smooth on the tip of the tongue with a finish that is simple but lasting.

Overall a solid offering from The Abbey and one that I would buy again and recommend to good friends. :)
