Alaskan Smoked Porter

A potential future contributor to the blog stopped by the office the other day and noted he had an oustanding beer… That beer just so happens to be one that I have been waiting to get on the blog and so here you are… Alaskan Smoked Porter.

We talked about how truly good this brew is and it comes down to a few things for me… it is smokey, as advertised, but not like quite as strong as Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier – Märzen and not quite as light as Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier.  Alaskan has it it right in the middle with a beer that offers silky smooth smokiness throughout the tasting session without ever being overpowering or controlling.  From nose to body to finish, this beer’s bitter-smooth smoke character pleases to the last drop… god that sounds like a marketing line, doesn’t it. 🙂

I was curious to see just how much this beer changed in a year. I recently sampled the 2008 Smoked Porter and absolutely loved it. I’ve heard how smoked beers age, at some point the smoke really mellows out and then years later can come back with a vengeance. I think you almost have to taste different years side by side to see how well it ages. Glad to see you got a taste of a year old bottle. That would have been worth trying.

Yeah… our future potential contributor mentioned above had the 2008 and also said it was great. I got the 2007 at our local Top Food and Drug… 🙂 I should go back and see if they have more and set it aside in the fridge for a while…
