Southern Tier Choklat

In stark contrast to the Brewery Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence from the other night, Southern Tier Choklat = the awesome.  Pretty much everything about this beer is done well, from pour to finish…

Upon opening this bad boy, a dark elixir pours from the bottle giving you hints at the smell and character.  A first whiff nearly brings a tear of joy to my eye as this just plain smells awesome.  Maybe one of the best smelling stouts ever… sweet and chocolaty to the core.   The big creamy head isn’t too high, but sticks around and keeps a tight cap on the rest of the brew.  The body is smooth and creamy and slides easily down the gullet as you savor the flavors of the obvious amounts of Belgian chocolate.  There is a slightly bitter at the top of the mouth but it isn’t a bad thing and the overall experience leaves a nice warm chocolaty finish with a hint of the ABV (11.0%) kicking around in there.  Beautifully dark, satiny smooth, this is a top quality chocolate ale.

  1. That’s a strong beer! 11%ABV, gotta be careful with that one, but from the sound of it they did a good job. I just read another review about their Creme Brulee that was also quite positive. I have to look around for these guys and try some of their stuff.

  2. I’ll try to find it, and thanks so much for the compliment! Much appreciated! Cheers!

Wow. I’ve been neglecting this beer in my fridge all year until just now, as I go through your ‘For The Win’ posts.

Sampling it right after reading this… at proper temperature, it really is impressive. Prior to this, I’ve had Rogue’s Chocolate Stout (win),Young’s Double Chocolate Stout (good), and Ommegang’s Chocolate Indulgence (similarly unimpressed).

I notice you haven’t posted about Rogue’s yet – give it a try. I’m not sure if it tops this, but it’s solid. I’ll have to face them off head to head sometime 🙂
