Sol Clara

Posted by dugpark on July 20, 2008

I was feeling a bit crazy the other day (not crazy like the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight that we watched tonight), but a little crazy, so I picked up the Sol Clara 1 quart (32oz) bottle and took it to the BBQ at the neighbors.  Let me tell you… not a bad idea.  While this isn’t my favorite Mexican beer, this one is now a solid #3 right after #1 Corona, and #2 Tecate

I was given a nice beer mug and I knew this was going to have a good taste to it when it actually poured a decent size head… I could smell the frothy goodness and immediately went in for the flavor.  A good, solid Mexican beer flavor hit me, reminding me that at some point in my life I would be doing this on a beach actually in the country… but nonetheless, it hit me good and lasted throughout the whole bottle.  No lime this time… it was fine without it, but I will have it next time… it just sounds good… especially right now after a long day.

BTW… they have a pretty cool website with some “interesting” advertising…

Michelob Lager

Posted by dugpark on March 29, 2008

We are going to luck out on the first leg of our vacation this year.  The blog is fully supported and endorsed by the kind parents-in-laws and they have even contributed a few brews.  I thank you!  After 14 hours of driving (see route here), one 5 hour stay in a hotel, and about 5 Rock Star Energy Drinks later, we arrived in Logan, UT at about 7pm on Friday, 3/28.  Luckily, we arrived to a good dinner of chicken noodle soup and crackers and beer.  First beer of the night happened to be Corona (which we have covered before) and then it was on to Michelob Lager.  I have to say… it was better than I thought it would be.  It doesn’t really hold a candle to some off the micro brews that we have learned to know and love, but still, it was refreshing after a long trip.

So, what was it like?  Light, very mildly hoppy, pretty smooth, and with little aftertaste.  Not something that you really remember, but then again, no bad memories either.

San Lucas Cerveza

Posted by dugpark on March 21, 2008

And so, I welcome myself to my first El Salvadorean beer tonight.  San Lucas Cerveza comes to us from Cerveceria La Constancia in El Salvador.  I don’t remember where I picked this up the other day, so don’t ask me how it came to be… I have never seen this beer anywhere in this area and likely won’t again unless they are making a big push… trying to ride the coattails of some of the popular Mexico beers that are so tasty and refreshing.  Ok… namely Corona of which there is a striking brand design and of which I had two of while at my daughter’s soccer game tonight (they won 7 – 4).  I would also have to say that Corona readily hands San Lucas a loss, as well… (2-1 tonight, at least). :)

So… how was it?  Golden, light, weak head, not a bad taste but nothing stood out.  Bottom line… not as good as Corona so why would you buy it unless maybe you were in El Salvador for some reason… then the “when in Rome” rule applies.

Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale

Posted by dugpark on March 8, 2008

Tonight we have another beer brought to us by the folk at Wells and Young’s Brewing Company out of the UK.  Our first review was of Young’s Double Chocolate Stout.  A Middle of the Road beverage as rated on that fine day.

So, we have Wells Bombardier English Premium Ale straight out of the bottle on the second go around and I have to admit that it was a bit more of the same.  While this beer has some flavor to it (I get smokey and dark fruity), it doesn’t leave an impact on me.  My neighbor Dave thought it quite nice, but he was drinking a Corona at the time, so that might have skewed his taste buds.

So, this one wasn’t great, which brings us a second beer from Wells and Young’s that isn’t that great.  Will have to give them one more chance before they are in the big time doghouse.

Corona Extra

Posted by dugpark on January 23, 2008

Our third beer from our friends at Grupo Modelo… Corona Extra graces the dinner table tonight.  A perfect night to save this wonderful lager for… taco salads, a good day at work and some lime wedges and that is all I need to feel completely refreshed.

According to the Grupo Modelo site, Corona is one of the most recognized Mexican beers in the world.  There is a reason for this, my friends… it is a great beer.  All year round…

Edit: Not sure why the picture is so friggin’ huge… ah well.
