Sol Clara

Posted by dugpark on July 20, 2008

I was feeling a bit crazy the other day (not crazy like the late Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight that we watched tonight), but a little crazy, so I picked up the Sol Clara 1 quart (32oz) bottle and took it to the BBQ at the neighbors.  Let me tell you… not a bad idea.  While this isn’t my favorite Mexican beer, this one is now a solid #3 right after #1 Corona, and #2 Tecate

I was given a nice beer mug and I knew this was going to have a good taste to it when it actually poured a decent size head… I could smell the frothy goodness and immediately went in for the flavor.  A good, solid Mexican beer flavor hit me, reminding me that at some point in my life I would be doing this on a beach actually in the country… but nonetheless, it hit me good and lasted throughout the whole bottle.  No lime this time… it was fine without it, but I will have it next time… it just sounds good… especially right now after a long day.

BTW… they have a pretty cool website with some “interesting” advertising…

Negra Modelo

Posted by dugpark on April 22, 2008

Interesting day… read an article about buying words by the letter yesterday, so decided to make sure we had our little piece of the action.  We now officially own the following words and associated linkage to this site:

Anyhow, just a little bit of fun for a total of $8.

So, for tonight we have Negra Modelo.  Not sure what was going on with my taste buds, but this one definitely didn’t do it for me tonight.  It hit me all wrong with some bad aftertaste and mediocre general flavor.  I have had Negra Modelo before and it wasn’t bad, but it just wasn’t there for me tonight.  It has a great, dark copper look to it.  Minimal head.  Taste is similar to other beer from these guys…

I have decided to go middle of the road on this one until I can buy some more and validate my true rating.

Budweiser Chelada

Posted by dugpark on April 10, 2008

Budweiser Chelada… specifically the one with Clamato.  This one has been sitting in my fridge since at least 3/9.  I have been dreading opening it… a little bit due to the large number of Caesar cocktails I had in Whistler just before this time, and little because I had a sneaking suspicion that I wouldn’t like it… well… I was right.  Two words = Nas ty.  I think it has a little bit to do with the smell… if I held my nose and went in, the taste was bad… if I took a whiff before the drink then I had a hard time swallowing it.  I ended up even trying to put a little green Tabasco in there, but that didn’t really do any good.  Overall, the red color was disturbing, the smell was horrific, and the taste wasn’t good.

I have no recommendations on this one… never again.

As an FYI… I was talking with Mauld at work today and he had some good experiences with cerveza preparada or chelada style beer in Mexico recently.  I have to agree that it sounds good that way… this just doesn’t do the trick, folks.

Dos Equis Ambar

Posted by dugpark on February 28, 2008

Second beer of the night.  Dos Equis Ambar with a lime slice for good measure.  Dos Equis comes to us from Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma Brewery in Mexico.  Enter your age on the first page and if you are old enough, you can see a spanish version of their site.  At least you can see all of the brands they are responsible for… :)

First a word of advice… when going directly to the Dos Equis site, make sure you only put one ‘x’ in the URL for http://dosxx.com.  If you put three ‘x’s in there, you might be in for a bit of a surprise… not that I would know or anything.  Also, it is worth checking out their international site here, as it is much, much cooler than the US one. Anyhow…

This was another Middle of the Road tonight.  Good but not great, easily forgettable.  In fact, merely 4 hours later and I still don’t quite remember much about this beer.  From what I do remember, it was a bit heavier than I expected but the heaviness did not net much in the taste department… so it leaves me with a kind of ‘eah’ feeling.

Miller Chill – Chelada Style

Posted by dugpark on February 19, 2008

I am not sure if I am coming down with a cold or if my throat just hurts from playing a bit too much Karaoke Revolution Presents: American Idol Encore… either way, I needed a cold, refreshing beverage that would help ease my pain.  Don’t ask why I choose Miller Chill Chelada Style, then, when I know I have an aversion to domestic macro-brews.  Ah well… water under the bridge.

As far as rating, goes, though… I am surprised to say that it isn’t that bad… really.  I thought the worst heading in, but I find that I can stomach this stuff.  While I wouldn’t put it in the ranks of Corona Extra, I would say that I wouldn’t turn it down if you offered it to me (unlike PBR… sorry Po).  It has a decent head on it, does have a hint of lime, doesn’t have a hint of salt, but overall is pretty tasty.

Statistics from their website: 12 oz = 110 cal and 4.2% alcohol.
